Hwy
37 crosses the Missouri on the Standing Bear Bridge from Nebraska
to the South Dakota side. A parking area with interpretive signs stands
at this end of the bridge. On Sept 1, 1806, on the return trip, the
Corps met a group of Teton Sioux. The Natives tried to coax them ashore.
Having had trouble with this tribe coming up river in 1804, the commanders
ignored the request. Down river, they came ashore to wait for one
of their lagging boats when they heard shooting. The troops ran toward
the sound ready to do battle to protect the boat crew. When they arrived,
they found a group of friendly Yankton Sioux taking target practice
at barrels floating in the river. The sign, above explains this incident.
Right, a local flower. |
