Lewis & Clark Trail
US HWY 12 heads west from Travelers' Rest. It follows a lot of the eastern portion of the Lolo Trail. Led by Old Toby and his son, the Expedition headed up Lolo Creek on a well worn Indian trail used by both Salish and Nez Perce. The creek flows close to the highway a few miles west of Travelers' Rest. The Corps stuck to the north side just as the highway does. Top left, the Bitterroot Range rises to the north of HWY 12 and the trail. Later, the Corps will have to face this challenge.
