Even
though the interpretive sign at Howard Creek says that HWY 12 doesn't
follow the trail along Lolo Creek, at Howard Creek you can access
part of the trail. The Corps had to turn northwest into high mountains
and ravines after bivouacking at Woodman Creek on Sept. 11. Here,
the trail is on private land. Public access starts at Graves Creek,
a few miles west. A half mile loop trail at Howard Creek puts you
in the footsteps of L&C. The trail samples the steep terrain they
were starting to experience. The photo, above, is the view west not
far from the trailhead - an easy way to see what the Corps faced. |
