An
interpretive sign in the park explains how experts know this is the
exact location of the September 9-11 1805 camp. Once they had located
the latrine by finding traces of mercury, used as medicine, and charcoal
from fires, the camp design fell into place. Top right, an artist's
rendition of the camp. Most of the tents had deteriorated by September,
1805, and were gone in 1806. Center right, the camp area. The white
poles, at left in photo, and others in the background, delineate the
camp according to von Steuben's military bivouac design. The drawing
at far right shows Lewis collecting and describing the bitterroot
plant at Travelers' Rest on the return journey in 1806. |
