Point Dam holds back the Missouri 4mi west of Yankton SD, creating
Lewis and Clark Lake. The visitor center perches on top of what is
left of Calumet Bluff. For 3 days. Aug. 29-31. 1804 the Corps met
with Yankton Sioux tribal leaders here. An interpretative sign (partially
shown, top right) at the Lewis & Clark Visitor Center depicts
what the meeting might have looked like. The Missouri River flows
past the visitor center and Calumet Bluff just below the dam, right.
The center can be accessed from NB Hwy 121. Unfortunately, the Corps
left its best Sioux language interpreter with the Yankton and greatly
missed his services when faced with hostile Teton Sioux a month later. |
