From Elk Point, I headed toward Vermillion, the home of the University
of South Dakota. Spirit Mound is 6 mi. north of Vermillion on SD
Hwy 19. It was a beautiful, sunny morning to be exploring a piece
of prairie looking much as it did for the Corps. Thanks to efforts
of the Spirit Mound Trust, National Park Service, and SD Dept. of
Fish, Game and Parks, the area was transformed from farmland into
natural prairie. Local tribes told Lewis & Clark that little
men inhabited the hill and shot all trespassers. Clark, Lewis, Seaman,
and 11 others marched for 6 hrs in high heat to get there. No little
men but a delightful view. These flowers were on the north side
of the mound. The plaque had to be placed close to the trail. The
one on the hill top was stolen!
