The
Pictograph Trail starts at Fort Mountain, follows along its base,
to this ancient design. Unfortunately, time and weather has obliterated
much of it. As the sign says, not much is known about it. However,
the figure provides evidence of long standing habitation of the headwaters
of the Missouri River. We know Sacajawea's Shoshone tribe established
temporary camps here to hunt buffalo. She was captured near this spot
by Hidatsa warriors years earlier. She recognized the landscape when
she returned with the Corps of Discovery. From here on, she would
make valuable contributions to the success of the expedition. Captain
Clark, and his party were the first white man to visit the area, but
she was its history. |
