Thompson
Creek tumbles down from the Ruby Mountains and crosses under the road,
and HCO, into the valley, top left. Looking at a map of Ruby Valley
and all the little blue lines coming from the mountains attests to
Henry Bloom's quote, left center. This spot was a popular camping
place for emigrants. The Donner Party stayed here September 16, 1846.
Our team got permission to camp also, top right. The Thompson Ranch,
established in 1871, owns the land around the creek. George Donner
couldn't enjoy the beautiful scenery. Two of his horses disappeared.
It's surmised that Shoshone Indians "found" them. In 1841,
John Bidwell encountered a large group of Shoshone at Sulphur Hot
Springs, just north of the creek. |
