From the top of the pass the pioneers
could look back at the Great Salt Lake Desert they had just crossed,
bottom left and right. The railroad sign aligns the trail from
northeast to southwest. Bidwell-Bartleson come south from Soda
Spring Utah with little trouble. Bryant-Russell traveled across
the desert, south of Great Salt Lake, on the Hastings Cutoff.
Having no wagons, they had few problems. Donner-Reed lost goods,
wagons, and animals. Top right, Pilot Peak wouldn't be a guide
any longer as the emigrants moved west. The trail follows a dry
landscape toward Silver Zone Pass, top left.
