July 7, 1806 Clark followed the Big Hole River SE with 50 horses
intended for trade at the Mandan villages later. He had 19 Corps
members to control the herd during the trek. These animals along
HWY 278 reminded me of his ominous start that morning; nine horses
missing! A wide search found none. Blaming the "Skulking Shoshones"
for the loss, the party headed toward Big Hole Pass.
