Clark Return Trail
7/27; Clark comments, "when we pass the Big horn I take my leave of the view of the tremendious chain of Rocky Mountains white with snow in view of which I have been Since the 1st of May last."[May 1805] The hunters were busy getting animal skins for clothing. 80 miles to camp.
After spending some time exploring Pompeys Pillar, Clark returned to the river for a few miles and camped northeast of Pompeys Pillar town on 7/25. On the 26th the party ran 62 miles down the Yellowstone to the Big Horn River. They camped a little past its confluence. Clark noted its muddy appearance. He notes many Crow signs, but no people.
