On the 33mi journey from 7/16 camp, the party examined this "Indian Fort" (description and illustration below). Sacagawea remarked that warriors, when outnumbered, built these to hold out until they could leave the area. Clark noted her clari-fication. Also, he continued to describe flora and fauna along the Yellowstone daily; usually a Lewis task.
7/18: After a routine trek from Three Forks ominous events emerged. Clark noted smoke, southeast, guessing a Crow source meaning good or bad results. Charbonneau was thrown from his horse and bruised face, hip and shoulder. Gibson "...fell...on a Snag and sent it nearly [two] inches into the Muskeler part of his thy." With the wounded, they made only 26 mi. and camped a few miles west of Columbus MT and Stillwater River.
Highway numbers 90 and 78 on map above are accurate.
