Meriwether Lewis at northern most point of the Lewis & Clark Trail 7/22.
Information signs reveal Lewis' reasons for ending this exploration phase; the most important being Cut Bank Creek turned west. The lack of game and the weather added misery to the plan. Daily journal entries emphasized deteriorating weather: 7/23-clouds over the moon "put an end to further observation." 7/24-"At 8A.M. the sun made it's[its] appearance...it shortly after clouded up again and continued to rain the balance of the day" 7/25:-"cold cloudy and raining..."I did not see the sun through the whole course of the day" 7/26:-"The morning was cloudy and continued to rain as usual..." [9AM no weather change] "I had the horses caught...."
