								I believe the Mandan buffalo robe is an original artifact. The Mandan's penchant for record keeping helped the Captains acquaint themselves with geography of the unknown land they were about to enter. The warrior ax became a popular item fabricated by John Shields, the Corps's blacksmith. At Ft Mandan, the axes were a popular trade item with the Mandan, for much needed food supplies.
