Lewis & Clark Trail
Lexington Missouri
Lexington, off US HWY 24 west of Waverly, is roughly half way between the June, 19 and June 20, 1804 campsites. The city is more noted for the Civil War than for Lewis & Clark's passage. The Battle of Lexington State Historic Site commemorates a major battle fought here in 1861. There are L&C information signs here including the map, top left. The Missouri River, looking toward the June 20 camp area, left. Large cottonwood trees like these fell into the river every day causing navigation problems. A strong current cause the crews to haul the boats up by rope almost daily. On the 20th the Expedition made only 6 3/4 miles from the 19th camp. Time taken to do astronomical observations not strong currents or wind led to a late start.
I photographed flowers everywhere - thinking they may be some Lewis described.
