Top left, a sergeant, manning the rudder from the stern, had this view of the keelboat. Clark designed the awning structure, storage lockers, and walkways along the sides. The walkway/covers could be raised to form a defense work if the Corps were attacked. He also had 11 benches made that could be placed crosswise for rowers when necessary. The map, above, shows the erratic course of the river. The "Coupee a Jacke" is a bow in the river where the it cuts through to shorten the course. Blue Lake at the park formed from this bow.The dark green line shows the location of the river now. The sign, bottom left, realistically depicts the towing process. The sign is located at Blackbird Overlook but fits better here.
