Captain Lewis's journal reveals how stunned and amazed he was at finding two fantastic falls; one "pleasingly beautifull" - Rainbow Falls and the other "sublimely grand'" - the Great Falls. Lewis named this third falls "Beautiful Cascade" Now it's Rainbow Falls. The views, above, can be seen at Rainbow Falls and Dam Overlook on Giant Springs Road in Great Falls. Private property access would by necessary to see Crooked and Rainbow Falls from Lewis's viewpoint on the north bank of the Missouri River.
After visiting the Great Falls, I drove southwest on US HWY 87 to the city of Great Falls. Crossing the Missouri River, I turned left onto Riverside Drive N, and left again on Giant Springs Road. Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, Giant Springs State Park, Rainbow Falls Overlook, and the trail to Crooked Falls are all along this road.
