Missouri Breaks - Missouri River
In the same journal entry, May 29th, 1805, that Lewis wrote about the Judith River, and the bull buffalo charge; he tells about spotting "... the remains of a vast many mangled carcases of Buffalow which had been driven over a precipice of 120 feet by the Indians...." These cliffs were supposedly the buffalo jump he saw. Later research revealed these didn't have the right configuration. Experts think the dead buffalo floated down the river and stacked up here. Not far up river, Lewis saw "...a bold running river, 20 yards wide, falling in on the south." (Above). He named it Slaughter River, after the earlier scene. It's now called Arrow Creek.
