Citidal Rock, above, has been a landmark for river travelers for two hundred years. Captain Lewis wrote one of his longest journal entries describing the "Natural Walls." These included Hole-in-the Wall, Cathedral Rock, and Citidal Rock. Lewis wrote: "These hills and river-cliffs exhibit a most extraordinary and romantic appearance. They rise ...perpendicular... to the height of between 200 and 300 feet, and are formed of very white sandstone, so soft as to yield readily to the impression of water...."
