Lewis & Clark Trail
Clark's Hill/Norton State Historical Site - the official name of the park - is just east of Osage City. The 13 acre wooded hill was donated to the state of Missouri by William and Carol Norton. The park opened in time for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in 2004. As the map indicates, the Corps camped here on June 1-2 then again on its return on Sept 19, 1806. Clark climbed the hill June 2 and discovered two Indian mounds. They are still there but impossible to see in a photograph under a tangled growth of brush and trees. The sign, above, at the sight describes the mound construction and purpose. The Osage River now meets the Missouri far downstream from where Clark viewed it from the hilltop.
