Social and cultural roles were divided between men and women in Mandan and Hidatsa tribes. Men delt with horses to hunt and fight, they cleansed Themselves physically and spiritually in sweat lodges. A saddle and sweat lodge, above, were important items in a family's home. Women inherited gardens and earthlodges, top right, from their mothers. Women were given the sacred title of "Keeper of Corn" whose role was to preside over the Green Corn ceremony. Knife River, right, provided a good supply of fish.
