Two major resources for the Mandan and Hidatsa - plants and bison. They cultivated Sunflowers, squash, corn, and beans. Women and children dug various plant roots and collected wild berries to supplement their agriculture. Bison, or buffalo (the more common name), were the main meat supply, deer and antelope filled their larders also. Buffalo hides, left, provided essential material for robes, clothing, and even canvas for artwork. Meat and corn hung from drying scaffolds, above. Animal hides were strung to dry, left.
