Lewis & Clark Trail
The red and white pirogue replicas were completed in 1992. Only the red one is on display. It is 32ft in length. The unfinished visitor center is in the background, left. Center, a view from the bow to stern. Right, a closer look at the mast. This priogue is in excellent condition. The original was manned by the civilian platoon of experienced boatmen commanded by Patroon Baptist Deschamps. These flat bottomed watercraft were smaller than the keelboat but still had to be poled and pulled upstream when the wind came from the wrong direction. The crew stood on top of the storage lockers, running along each side, to push the boat forward. The tops of the lockers, when flipped up, served as protection from attacks.
