years in the making, "Discovery" is in top condition. It
was launched in 1990 and continues to be used in annual celebrations
- held in early June since 2005. I was here in August,2007 - all was
quiet. Left, is a window into the captains' quarters. They took turns
commanding from the upper deck of the stern, above their quarters.
Sergts. Floyd, Ordway and Pryor's platoons manned the boat. It needed
a large crew to pole and pull it up river against the current. The
rudder, center was manned from the upper stern deck. The brass swivel
cannon, right , located on the bow, came into play more as a deterrent
than a weapon. |
