Lewis & Clark Trail

Knife River Indian Villages
National Historic Site ND

These ancient villages were similiar to On-A-Slant and Double Ditch villages, down river, except they were still inhabited when Lewis & Clark arrived in the fall of 1804. At Washburn, you cross to the west/south side of the Missouri on ND 200A to Stanton. The visitor center is just beyond the town. There is a fully furnished lodge replica just beyond the center, top right. Right, the inside of the entrance with an animal hide door and deer hoof doorbell. Above, the hearth area with a collection of typical lodge items. Archeological studies show that Hidatsa tribes have lived here since about 1300. The general area around this section of Knife River shows people living here for about 11,000 years. I visited the two sites closest to the visitor center; Awatixa Xi'e Village (Lower Hidatsa Site) and Awatixa Village (Sakakawea Site).
