Haystack
Rock, surrounded by the Needles, rises 235 feet above the sea floor,
top left. A heron starts into flight, top right. Captain Clark was
disappointed at not being able to persuade the Tillamooks to let him
purchase more, but he was thankful for what he had: "Small as
this Stock is I prise it highly; and thank providence for directing
the whale to us; and think him much more kind to us than he was to
jonah, having Sent this monster to be Swallowed by us in Sted of Swallowing
of us as jonah's did." - A rare humorous phrase by Clark. Then
he had to turn his attention to the return over Tillamook Head. On
January 9, 1806 he wrote: "we have now to look back and shudder
at the dreadfull road on which we have to return of 45 miles S E of
Point adams & 35 miles from Fort Clatsop." |
