The
Missouri flows placidly by Double Ditch Village, above. You can drive
along a dirt road, just below the bushes, for a closer look at the
river. Walking paths wind throughout the site. One of the interpretive
signs explains the layout ( see previous page) and construction of
a typical earthlodge. My journey allowed me to visit an actual lodge
prior to viewing this site. By the time I reached the Knife River
Villeges, up river, I had a pretty good idea what they were all about.
This accumulation of knowledge came from various national, state,
and local agencies. They do a great job presenting replicas, displays,
and signs to educate the public. You can still see surface indentations
of lodge locations, right. Although off the main highway - US 83 -
Double Ditch Village, on ND 1804, is worth your time. |
