The
diorama, top left, reproduces a trading scene with coastal natives.
The Corps members traded mainly for roots and dried fish. They traded
for camas roots in Idaho, and wapato roots, left, on the Columbia.
The Chinookan canoe, above, is an example of a large one. Note the
curved lines of the gunwale. The natives formed these by pouring hot
water into the carved cedar or fir structure making the wood easier
to form into the desired shape. They had several sized canoes. |
