The Clark Tree site stands at the northern end of the Discovery
Trail. Experts consider this the farthest point north that Clark's
party traveled. A commemorative bench, top right, marks the spot.
The bronze, sculpted, 20 foot tree represents a tree where Clark
carved his message somewhere along this coastal dune complex. That
morning Clark had sent hunters ahead to "Kill Something for
Brackfast.... they had killed a Small Deer on which we brackfast[.]"
The deer was probably a Columbian black-tailed deer. He described
one, in detail, that day "[with] the top of the tale black...."
