Among the many books the Captains included in their library were books by other explorers, botany, biology, mathematics and a dictionary. Examples of these tomes are displayed here. The natives were adept at fashioning their own weapons, left. By the time of the Corps's arrival they also had firearms, acquired from ships in trade.
These military items remind the visitor that the Corps of Discovery was indeed a part of the United States Army. By the time they reached the Pacific Ocean there was little evidence of this except for firearms and some brass buttons saved for trade with the natives. Deerskin clothes, top center, replaced uniforms.
