The view from the Wahkiakum County Ferry Landing
on Puget Island: Left side; east, up the Columbia. Right side; west,
down the Columbia. The Corps passed Puget Island Nov. 7, 1805 with
"the fog so thick we could not see across the river...."
as Clark described the day. They stopped and traded here on March
25, 1806, on their return journey. Lewis noted the river edge vegetation:
"I observe that the green bryer [Pacific blackberry] retains
its leaves all winter. - the red willow [red osier dogwood] ...
put fourth their leaves." The mountains in the background are
on the Oregon side of the river.
