Ridgefield Washington
This small patch of wapato grew near the Oaks to Wetlands Trail, on the way to Carty Lake, in the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. I was there in early fall so colors were changing. The natives collected berries, but I don't think these blackberries existed then. Wapato root would be a main staple of the Corps diet from early November, 1805, until they were past the Columbia Gorge on the return journey early April, 1806.
