From Marine Park, right, and Thunder Island top center, the slide areas that created the Bridge of the Gods. Greenleaf Peak is on the left.. The Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler, top center, runs tours of the Columbia from Marine Park. The Corps bivouacked across the Columbia on Oct. 30-31, 1805. Clark described the river here as: "This Great Shute or falls is about 1/2 mile [long].
Sgt. Patrick Gass commented that the passage of these rapids "Was the most fatiguing business..." Left and right, although the catch was slim - the salmon appear as single white blurs at the bottom of the net- Indians still use traditional platform fishing methods. The Corps noted this style of fishing along the Columbia Gorge.
