The post office part of the courthouse saw a great deal of activity during the Corps' stay in the area. Many members besides the captains sent and received letters and goods there. The Corps, led by Clark, rendezvoused with Lewis here on December 10th, 1803. Lewis had gone ahead on land while the crews worked their way up the Mississippi River. He went to Cahokia and then to St Louis to confer with Spanish leaders still in charge of Upper Louisiana. Two days later, Clark had the Corps building a road from the Wood River landing to the camp site. Cahokia, after St Louis, became the supply source for the camp construction and preparation for the continuation of the journey in the spring of '04. Here You can almost walk in the footprints of Captains Lewis and Clark and the Corps.
