Continuing
up Hwy 1806 from Ft Yates, hugging the Missouri, I arrived at Ft Abraham
Lincoln State Park. It is most notable for being the last command
post of George Armstrong Custer. However, my visit concerned the old
Mandan village sharing the same site. The village visitor center houses
many interesting artifacts, including a model of the entire village,
above. The actual grounds of the original village has two living lodge
replicas and one ceremonial lodge, top right. Right, an interior view
of a typical habitation. Walking through this site on Oct 20, 1804,
Clark commented briefly about seeing "old remains of a villige
on the Side of a hill." I was lucky enough to camp here at the
confluence of the Heart and Missouri Rivers that night. |
