From
the Wishram Overlook, on WA HWY 14, you can look east and see the
confluence of the Deschutes River with the Columbia, above. On October
22nd, 1805, the Corps left the Deschutes River, crossed the Columbia
at the west end of Miller Island (left side of the photo) and landed
at the Wishram village below this point. Top center, a circa 1950
photograph of local Native Americans fishing at Celilo Falls. Notice
the same rr. bridge in the background as in my photo, right. They
portaged around this obstruction on its north side. The canoes were
lowered over a smaller falls on the south side. There was no need
to portage the canoes on the return. The Corps headed overland; and
burned them for cooking. |
