a model lodge stands in the Sacajawea Interpretive Center. The sign
and pole structure, left, are north of the moorage dock on the Snake
River side of Sacajawea State Park. In an extensive journal entry
[October 17th, 1805] Captain Clark described the local culture including
habitations: "The Houses or Lodges of the tribes of the main
Columbia river is of large mats made of rushes, Those houses are from
15 to 60 feet in length...Supported by poles on forks in the inner
Side...." |
