The
October 12th camp was somewhere below the cliffs, above. The Lower
Monumental Dam, down river, holds back water, creating Lake Herbet
G. West Lake, which put the campsite area under water. The Captains'
list of rapids, left, emphasizes the constant labor needed to travel
these rivers. Clark examined Texas Rapids (not named by the Captains)
carefully before running them: "we found [the rapids] long and
dangerous about 2 miles in length, and maney turns necessary to Stear
Clare of the rocks, which appeared in every direction." The Indians'
canoes and the Corps's small canoe passed the rapids that day; the
rest, the next morning. |
