right, the north bank of the Clearwater River where the "old
Indian trail" ran. A railroad track runs along the river now.
On September 24th, the Corps left the Weippe villages and "descended"
to the Clearwater River and bivouacked on an island in the river,
about a mile up river from Orofino. On the 26th they set up a camp
here, left image, to construct five canoes in order to return to river
travel. The 38 horses were turned over to the Nez Perce to keep until
the return trip. The Captains also cached the pack saddles and some
ammunition. |
