Lewis & Clark
Trail
Weippe Idaho
The field, above, is the actual field Captain Clark and the hunters crossed and met the Nez Perce. It's a domestic hay field now. Clark came from the mountains in the background. They came first to some boys digging camas roots. These roots were a main food staple for the Nez Perce. Sgt. Ordway was impressed with the method of turning these bulbs into bread: "these natives have a large quantity of this root bread which they call Commas. the roots grow in the plains. they have kills [ovens] engeaniously made where they Sweet [bake] these roots and make them Sweet and good to the taste."
