The
Clearwater River flows northwest here. Long Camp was on the far side
of the river. Named Camp Chopunnish later; Lewis & Clark's name
for the Nez Perce. Lewis's original optimism gradually vanished as
game became scarce and their trade goods dwindled: "each man's
stock in trade amounts to no more than one awl, one Knitting pin,
a half an ounce of vermillion, two needles, a few scanes of th[r]ead
and about a yard of ribbon...." They traded for horse meat, bread,
