colors appeared along the trial in mid-September. The Corps may have
noticed colors too, but they were in a hurry to leave these mountains.
The orange, 18 inch wide, mushroom cluster, right, would have been
hard to miss. The brown one, top left, seems to take on the texture
of the tree giving it sustenance. Lewis didn't describe mushrooms
as he did plants and animals. Sacajawea, Indian guides Old Toby, and
his son, might have been able to identify edible ones. |
