Lewis & Clark Trail
Lolo Motorway Idaho
Fall colors appeared along the trial in mid-September. The Corps may have noticed colors too, but they were in a hurry to leave these mountains. The orange, 18 inch wide, mushroom cluster, right, would have been hard to miss. The brown one, top left, seems to take on the texture of the tree giving it sustenance. Lewis didn't describe mushrooms as he did plants and animals. Sacajawea, Indian guides Old Toby, and his son, might have been able to identify edible ones.
