This
site is about two miles west of Salmon Trout Camp on FR 500. The hunters,
mentioned in Lewis's journal entry, were Pvt. Alexander Willard, and
either Pvt. Joseph or Reubin Fields. They, as well as others, were
assigned as the Expedition's hunters. The Captains knew they would
find game scarce higher up in the Bitterroot Mountains. The Nez Perce
guides, who volunteered to guide them, thought it was too early in
the season, so remained at Weippe. |
