Our group made its way from Indian Grave to the Smoking Place, cross
country, along an open ridge, top left and bottom right. A mother
grouse keeps a watchful eye on her fledgling's adventurous wandering.
Both Lewis and Clark called them Pheasants. The Corps consumed a few
on the trek across the Bitterroot Range. Neither the Clark party of
six hunters, nor Lewis's main party passed near enough to Smoking
Place to mention it in 1805. They would comment on it on their return
in 1806. After Leaving Sinque Hole/Indian Grave Camp, the two parties
would not converge again until Lewis arrived at Weippe Prairie on
September 22, 1805. |
