Returning to US 75, on the Nebraska side of the Missouri, you arrive at this overlook about 3mi north of Decatur. It represents and explains the Omaha culture. L&C came to the area to visit the burial site of Chief Blackbird. He died 4 years before the Corps of Discovery reached this spot. The burial site is now on private property but this overlook nearby gives you a sense of what they experienced. L&C had already met Omaha tribal leaders down river. The sign, top right, explains the lodge structure and the socio-religous aspects of the living arrangements. From this hilltop, right, you can see the curve of the Missouri River flowing from the north. Iowa is on the right side.
