Lewis & Clark Trail
Travelers' Rest State Park
Lolo Montana
The bottle, above, contains mercury laden soil from the latrine area of the campsite. Right, a copy of camp design as directed from Baron von Steuben's military manual (see page 176). These items are located in the foyer of the Holt Museum. A portion of wall in the main hall holds a collection of wood burning tool drawings depicting trees and flowers found by the Expedition. Lewis noticed the difference between the black cottonwoods, here, and others growing along the Missouri River. Private Whitehouse also commented on the trees: "We found along the Creek a considerable quantity of Cotton wood timber...." The Corps first bivouacked here September 9 & 10, 1805.
