After
Clark's reconnaissance party returned with the discouraging news that
the Salmon River route to the Columbia wasn't possible, the full party
trekked north. A mile past Tower Rock they turned northeast up Tower
Creek. On August 22, Clark had continued up the North Fork of the
Salmon through rugged canyons. He didn't recommend this route for
the full party. So they veered northeast , up Tower Creek. |

A
road leads up Tower Creek along the L & C trail. It ends before
arriving at the August 31st campsite - on private land. A good parking
lot with interpretative signs (above) is located near the end of the
road. Cottonwood trees line Tower Creek as it flows from the northeast
toward the Salmon River, left. The Tower Creek road is about a mile
north of Tower Rock Campground. Turn right off US HWY 93. |
