Top
and bottom left, the Beaverhead River flows past the base of Clark's
Lookout. The stream entering from the left, in the photo at left,
may be " McNea'ls Creek." Clark named it for a Corps member,
Hugh McNeal. The crews were "... obliged to haul the boat[s]
3/4 of the Day over Shole water." (Clark's words) that day. Maybe
he wanted to boost morale by honoring a Corps member. Both Captains
repeatedly named geographic features after Corps members as well as
others. This creek is now called Blacktail Deer Creek. Top right,
Clark's Lookout viewed from a higher hill. The Ruby Range of the Rocky
Mountains sits beneath a cloud cap to the northeast of Dillon and
Clark's Lookout, above. |
