Indian Cave State Park NB
Lewis & Clark Trail
This spectacular sandstone opening is ancient. The people who inhabited this cave and etched these petroglyphs are unknown. It's located at the southeast end of the park, not too far above the Expedition's July 13 camp. Most likely, neither Captain Lewis nor Captain Clark discovered the cave. The Missouri runs about 500 yards at most from here. The channel hasn't changed much since 1804. They camped on a sand bar in the middle of the river. Rain and wind delayed there launch until 7 AM. I imagine their full attention was on storm clouds that morning. With limited visibility, their attention wasn't on the surrounding area.
