In
September, 2006, the end of HCO was documented by a lone sign, left,
created for a centennial celebration in 1984. Beaten up by harsh northern
Nevada weather, it's barely legible now. The mouth of South Fork Canyon
is visible beyond ranch land, bottom left. The old sign and the canyon
view are at Exit 292, I-80 in northern Nevada. A railroad track marker,
designating the Greenhorn Cutoff, stands north of this exit. A slender,
white California Trail marker points the way to the cutoff, above
- a more useful trail than HCO. This scene dramatically changed a
few years later - a CT Visitor Center! |
